Indigenous Peoples' Day and the Leadership Practice of Honoring Perspective

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a reminder that history, identity, and lived experience shape how people move through the world. In business, leaders often focus on efficiency, performance, and outcomes. Yet the strongest cultures are built by leaders who understand that perspective is a strategic asset.
Honoring perspective is not a holiday activity. It is a leadership practice that influences how teams collaborate, communicate, and solve problems.
Here are three ways leaders can use this week to strengthen cultural awareness and build more inclusive workplaces.
1. Slow Down and Listen for Context
Leaders often listen for answers. Inclusive leaders listen for context. When you understand the experiences that shape someone’s viewpoint, you make better decisions and build stronger relationships.
A simple shift is to ask one additional question in conversations: What experiences or concerns are shaping your perspective on this
This question opens the door to deeper understanding.
2. Examine How Your Systems Support or Limit Inclusion
Policies, processes, and habits often reflect the perspective of the people who created them. This week is a good time to review whether your systems support inclusion or unintentionally create barriers.
Consider looking at:
How decisions are made
Who is invited into conversations
How feedback is collected and acted on
Small adjustments can create meaningful change.
3. Highlight Voices That Are Not Always Heard
Leaders set the tone for whose voices matter. When you intentionally elevate perspectives that are not always centered, you strengthen trust and broaden your organization’s ability to solve problems creatively.
This can be as simple as asking someone who has not spoken yet to share their thoughts or inviting employees to contribute ideas in writing if they prefer.
